32 Valleta, Malta- Hagar qim Temples-Heritage Malta

Hagar Qim Temples are an ancient archaeological site located on the southern coast of the Mediterranean island of Malta. The temples are part of the UNESCO World Heritage site known as the "Megalithic Temples of Malta," which includes several other temple complexes on the islands.

Hagar Qim is believed to have been constructed between 3600 and 3200 BCE, making it one of the oldest megalithic temple sites in the world. The temples were built by the prehistoric inhabitants of Malta, who left behind an impressive architectural legacy.

The Hagar Qim complex consists of two main temples, which are surrounded by a series of massive stone walls and other structures. The temples are constructed using large limestone blocks, some of which weigh several tons. 

The temples are primarily dedicated to the worship of a fertility goddess, and the site features numerous altars, chambers, and niches that were likely used for religious rituals and ceremonies. Part of St. John Cathedral is the adjoining museum, which provides further insights into the history and art of the Knights. The museum displays a rich collection of religious art, silverware, armor, and ceremonial items associated with the Order.

30 Valleta, Malta- St. John Cathedral (interior)

The interior of St. John's Co-Cathedral is a masterpiece of Baroque art. It features intricately carved stone walls, gilded decorations, and a stunning marble floor adorned with over 400 tombstones of the knights. The cathedral is also home to two famous works by the renowned artist Caravaggio: "The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist" and "St. Jerome Writing."

29 Valleta, Malta- Citta Vecchia Malta

The old town of Valletta, often referred to as the "Citta Vecchia," is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the heart of the city's historical and cultural heritage. It is a fortified area that preserves much of the original 16th-century layout and architecture designed by the Knights of St. John.

The old town is characterized by its narrow, winding streets, charming squares, and well-preserved buildings. Walking through the old town feels like stepping back in time, as you can admire the architectural styles of the Baroque period, with influences from Italian, French, and Spanish traditions.

One of the most prominent landmarks in the old town is St. John's Co-Cathedral, a magnificent church that showcases the opulence and grandeur of the Knights of St. John. Built between 1572 and 1577, the cathedral is dedicated to St. John the Baptist and served as the conventual church of the Order.

Another notable feature of the cathedral is the adjoining museum, which provides further insights into the history and art of the Knights. The museum displays a rich collection of religious art, silverware, armor, and ceremonial items associated with the Order.

28-Valleta, Malta

 Valletta is the capital city of Malta, a small island nation located in the Mediterranean Sea. It is one of the smallest capital cities in the world, both in terms of size and population. Valletta is situated on the northeastern coast of Malta and occupies a strategic position on a narrow peninsula between two deep harbors, the Grand Harbor and Marsamxett Harbor.

The city was founded by the Knights of St. John in 1566, following the Great Siege of Malta, and it was named after the Grand Master of the Order, Jean Parisot de la Valette. Valletta was designed as a fortified city, featuring an innovative grid layout and a series of bastions, walls, and forts. The architectural style of Valletta reflects the influences of the various civilizations that have ruled Malta over the centuries, including the Knights of St. John, the French, and the British.

Valletta is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is often referred to as an open-air museum due to its rich historical and cultural heritage. The city is renowned for its well-preserved 16th-century buildings, charming narrow streets, and impressive Baroque architecture. Some notable landmarks in Valletta include St. John's Co-Cathedral,
