Three Pagodas - Dali, China

Built during 823-840 AD by King Quan Fengyou of Nanzhao Kingom.  These three pagodas were built to guard against natural disasters, such as earthquakes and floods, as per descriptions on the pagoda: "Forever Control Mountains and Rivers".

The three pagodas are made of one big pagoda and two smaller pagodas, forming a symmetric triangle. Behind the pagodas, is a reflection pond which gives these three pagodas an exquisite picture!

Stone Forest - Kunming, China

Stone Forest - Kunming, China

The Stone Forest, known as Shilin in Chinese, is a remarkable natural wonder and geological site located in Yunnan Province, China, approximately 120 kilometers (75 miles) from the provincial capital of Kunming. It is one of China's most renowned and unique tourist attractions, as well as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Stone Forest is famous for its towering karst limestone formations that resemble a forest of stone pillars, giving the site its name. These stone formations are believed to be over 270 million years old and were created through the processes of erosion, dissolution, and deposition.

Karst topography is characterized by the dissolution of limestone and the creation of distinctive landforms, such as sinkholes, caves, and jagged limestone pillars. The Stone Forest showcases these unique geological features on a grand scale.

The Stone Forest is steeped in local legends and myths. One popular legend tells the story of Ashima, a beautiful Sani (a local ethnic group) girl who was turned to stone when she was unable to marry the man she loved. The Stone Forest's formations are said to represent various characters and elements of this and other local legends.

In addition to its geological wonders, the Stone Forest is home to a diverse array of plant and animal species, including orchids, camellias, and a variety of birds.

The Stone Forest offers well-maintained pathways and trails that allow visitors to explore the site while admiring the unique rock formations. Some pathways even lead through narrow gorges and caves, providing a sense of adventure.
