New Zealand- 2) Mount Victoria, Auckland/Devenport

Devonport, a quaint town, proved to be easily navigable upon arrival at the pier. It took me a mere 10 minutes to reach the trailhead of Mount Victoria.

Mount Victoria, known by its Māori name Takarunga, is nestled on the North Shore of Auckland, just a brief ferry ride from downtown Auckland.

Accessible via walking tracks from Devonport village, the summit of Mount Victoria is a favored destination for both locals and visitors.

From the summit, breathtaking panoramic views unfold, encompassing Auckland's skyline, dominated by the iconic Sky Tower, and the shimmering waters of Waitematā Harbour, adorned with the scattered islands of the Hauraki Gulf.

Here are some photos taken while hiking Mount Victoria:

New Zealand- 1) Auckland

Upon our arrival in Auckland by sea, our first task was to acquire an AT HOP card, essential for navigating the city's comprehensive public transportation system, including ferry services. We procured it swiftly from a conveniently located vending machine at the pier. There, we were promptly greeted by two attentive staff members, who inquired about our interests in Auckland and offered their recommendations. They kindly inquired about our itinerary and suggested exploring Devonport as a captivating destination.

Our accommodation at Lylo Auckland, situated in downtown Auckland, proved to be strategically located within walking distance of numerous attractions and afforded easy access to public transportation. A stay at Lylo Auckland, a distinguished hostel, provided us with ample opportunities to mingle with fellow travelers, particularly young backpackers.

The hostel's charming café, where we indulged in delightful beverages and comforting cuisine, spending evenings socializing with fellow patrons. One memorable night was spent reveling in the jovial atmosphere of St. Patrick's Day celebrations with the spirited youngsters.

Exploring downtown Auckland on foot revealed a cityscape characterized by a blend of architectural styles, ranging from old-world charm to modern marvels, all interspersed amidst ongoing construction projects. Despite the hilly terrain, the walkability of the city made it an enjoyable urban excursion.

Our Auckland adventure was filled with memorable experiences, including:

Day 1:

Ascended Mount Eden to admire panoramic views.

Attended a captivating performance at the City Hall.

Savored a delightful dinner at Bar Albert, relishing the scenic vistas of the Auckland Sky Tower.

Culminated the evening with a delectable dining experience at Shakespear Hotel Restaurant.

Day 2:

Embarked on a scenic ferry ride from Pier Walf #2 to explore Devonport.

Explored Mount Victoria, soaking in its natural beauty.

Relaxed on the shores of Cheltenham Beach.

Immerse in maritime history at the Torpedo Bay Naval Museum.

Enjoyed a leisurely lunch in town, savoring local cuisine.

My departure from Auckland proved to be an adventure in itself:

That morning, an accident occurred on the street in front of the hostel, prompting me to navigate a detour with my suitcase—downhill, then uphill. Despite the unexpected obstacle, I arrived at the transportation hub on time to catch the 10:30 am bus. From there, I planned to board an express bus to the airport, opting for the cost-effective alternative to taxi services.

As the bus pulled in, two drivers engaged in a prolonged discussion before the vehicle shifted to an adjacent bay and came to a halt. One of the drivers, a man, stormed off in apparent frustration, leaving the other, a woman, to address us. She informed us that due to a road accident earlier in the day, the arrival of the next bus would be delayed by approximately 10 minutes, without specifying further details.

Despite the initial announcement, we found ourselves waiting for the scheduled bus for a full half-hour (the bus runs every 30 minutes). It was then that the woman driver reappeared, ushering us onto the very same bus that had been stationary in its place for the entire duration—30 minutes till the next bus scheduled.  Quite the unexpected turn of events, to say the least!

Meanwhile, the man standing next to me found himself in a tight spot, with his flight looming close. He hastily ordered an Uber just 3 minutes before the woman driver reappeared. To his surprise, as she began boarding passengers onto the bus, his Uber arrived simultaneously which he can't dismiss his ride.

The journey to the airport took approximately 25 minutes, and I boarded my flight on time, despite the unexpected delays and last-minute adjustments.

Kunming, China

Kunming, the capital city of Yunnan province in southwestern China, earns its moniker as the "City of Eternal Spring" owing to its consistently mild climate, making it a favored destination for tourists both domestic and international. Here's a glimpse into some intriguing facets I encountered during my visit:

Abundance of Gardens and Parks: Kunming boasts numerous gardens and parks, offering a perennial display of vibrant flowers, most of them are accessible to the public free of charge.

Senior-Friendly Public Transportation: Kunming's public transport system, particularly its buses, caters to the elderly populace, with free rides for individuals aged 60 and above, contributing to the city's allure as a retiree haven. Meanwhile, the metro and private vehicles remain popular among the working demographic.

Ubiquitous Electric Motorbikes: The cityscape is dotted with electric motorbikes, favored for their ease of parking and environmental friendliness, emitting none of the noise associated with traditional gasoline-powered counterparts.

Everywhere you go, you have public sharing e-bikes available for your convivences as well.

Digital Economy: Kunming's residents conduct a significant portion of their transactions via smartphone, utilizing the ubiquitous WeChat app for payments, even for purchases as modest as 1 yuan. This digital convenience extends to street vendors, seamlessly integrating technology into daily commerce.

Convenience Galore: I stayed near Yunnan University where it offers a convenience-laden landscape catering to students' needs, with a plethora of street food options, and readily accessible stores stocking everything from daily essentials to cutting-edge technology gadgets like computers, printers, and cameras.

Enhanced Safety Measures: Kunming prioritizes safety with an extensive network of surveillance cameras, contributing to its reputation as one of the safest locales to reside in.

Internet Landscape: Notably, Kunming diverges from the Western norm in terms of internet access, with platforms like Google and Yahoo inaccessible. Instead, Baidu serves as the predominant search engine, reflecting the distinctive digital ecosystem prevalent in China.

Fast Delivery System: Kunming boasts an efficient delivery network where a simple phone call ensures hot meals at your doorstep within 5 minutes. Additionally, groceries can be delivered within an hour of placing your order, offering unparalleled convenience to residents and visitors alike.

The Siberian Seagulls: Each year, the Siberian seagulls migrate to Kunming to spend their winter months. Their presence at the parks, especially those with water features, brings immense joy to the local residents.

My trip to six countries in four months

Recently, I spent 4 months traveling to England, China, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, and New Zealand. The exhilaration of exploring new lands and cultures filled my days, and now, as I sit in the comfort of my home, I reflect on the incredible journey.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia:  the cultural, financial, and political heart of Malaysia. Nestled on the west coast of the Malay Peninsula, it exudes an irresistible allure—a blend of tropical vibrancy and urban sophistication.

Petronas Towers: These iconic twin towers, once the tallest in the world, pierce the sky like silver needles. Their gleaming façade reflects the city’s ambition and progress. At night, when they illuminate the skyline, it’s a sight to behold.

Cultural Melting Pot: Wander through the vibrant streets, where diverse cultures intersect. The air carries the aroma of Malay, Chinese, and Indian cuisines—from spicy rendang to delicate dim sum. Petaling Street, the bustling heart of Chinatown, beckons with its colorful stalls and tantalizing street food.

Singapore dazzled with its futuristic skyline. The Gardens by the Bay, the Marina Bay Sands, and the vibrant hawker centers—weaved together a harmonious blend of nature and innovation. The melting pot of cultures left me inspired.

Australia—a vast canvas of wonders. Sydney’s Opera House against the azure harbor.
